Happy Anniversary!

5 years ago today, we bought The Oliver Inn Bed and Breakfast! Tom and I sold most of what we had,  made a life change, and packed up our things and moved here to South Bend.  We love being Innkeepers! Living in downtown South Bend is great. Fabulous dining and entertainment all within walking distance.   Great museums and other family fun places, like Coveleski Stadium and the East Race!

If you get the chance to come and stay with us, we would welcome the opportunity to show you some hospitality!

We are glad we live in this historic neighborhood!

Birds

Our house is for the Birds!  Today we sat in the gardens and watched several different finches, robins, blue jays, doves, nut hatches, cardinals, and many more swoop in and out, take turns at the feeders and chaperone their new born chicks all over the yard.  It was so nice to sit and watch all the different birds interacting around us.

Come and relax in our yard among the birds!

Happy Earth Day!

Here at the Oliver Inn we always make earth friendly choices whenever possible.

We use CF light bulbs wherever possible , we recycle just about everything we can, we use green cleaning products and laundry soap and we have energy efficient appliances. We use quick dry towels to save on energy, and have switched to a new environmentally friendly shampoos with a 92% waste reduction over the packaging of  our previous shampoos.

We buy locally and keep our errands condensed so we use less gasoline. We encourage our guests to walk to local attractions  and resturants to save on their gas also.

We bake and cook nearly everything from scratch, saving on packaging products and using more natural ingredients.

What are some ways you are making green choices in your community?

Flowers in Winter!

People love to get flowers. And not just on the special days–Valentine’s Day, anniversary, birthday… Flowers are always a nice surprise. Flowers are a great way to tell your special someone, “I love you; I’m thinking of you.”

Here we are, in the middle of a long, snowy winter. Maybe a sunny bouquet is just what your wife needs to brighten her day. Or ladies, perhaps you can do a turnaround and get your husband a rose or a few beautiful flowers from the store you’re shopping at today.

Some of our most popular packages at the Inn include flowers. It’s always fun to see the reactions of the one being surprised with flowers as a special treat. Just remember, it’s always a good day to bring someone flowers!

Never too late for Romance!

You missed Valentine’s Day, you say? You’re in trouble, you say? Well, it’s never too late for romance. It doesn’t have to be just one day of the year.

This weekend we had 40 people at the Inn, taking a break from the everyday rat race to spend some quiet time together. But there are still plenty of opportunities if you weren’t able to make it for Valentine’s Day. A visit to the Oliver Inn can be enhanced with our Double Dark Chocolate Truffles from the South Bend Chocolate Company, a bouquet of roses, or even rose petals scattered around your room waiting to surprise your special someone. We also have dinner packages with Tippecanoe Place (right next door!) and LaSalle Grill, to save you time and money. We make the reservations and take care of all the plans. Give us a call and let us help pick out a fireplace or Jacuzzi suite for your perfect getaway. Don’t forget—you can keep romance alive everyday.

Candlelight Breakfast

From the time we first got married, Tom and I shared the dream of someday owning a bed and breakfast.  When circumstances gave us the chance to start a new career, we finally decided that we should quit talking about owning an Inn and buy one.

And we love owning and operating the Oliver Inn.

One of the reasons we chose the Oliver Inn is that it is both elegant and comfortable. We want our guests to experience relaxation from the moment they walk in the front door.  We usually have quiet music playing, and we bake fresh chocolate chip cookies every afternoon. In the morning, we serve a candlelight breakfast with background music from our grand piano. There are no clocks in our dining room, and our guests can relax and forget about the outside world for a short time.

Most of us lead very chaotic lives, running here and there for meetings and errands. It’s rare that we take the time to relax. Let me challenge you to take some time this week to turn off the blaring TV and turn on some quiet music. Light candles at breakfast. Sit and visit where there are no clocks and just be with your sweetheart—or enjoy a moment alone to rejuvenate.

If you would like to practice your relaxing skills we’d love to host you here at the Inn. Any time of the year is a good time to have a getaway from the world. www.oliverinn.com.

Happy Ground Hogs Day!

Phil

Ever see the movie Groundhog Day? A fun and thought-provoking date night movie. Bill Murray plays an arrogant and egotistical weatherman who is stuck living the same day over and over again. Once he realizes he can’t do anything about his predicament, he decides to make the most of it. He learns to play the piano. He gets to know each person in town. He even saves a homeless man’s life.

So where’s the romance, you ask? One of my favorite parts of the movie is the way this man watches the girl he loves and learns to know exactly what she looks like, enough to make a reproduction of her face. I wonder how often we are aware of what is going on around us in such detail.

Try spending today looking at the people around you with an eye toward details you may never have taken the time to notice before. What can you compliment someone on, or start a conversation about? Maybe buy your friend or loved one a small token that means something special–a bouquet of her favorite flowers, a book on a topic he’s expressed an interest in, or her favorite treat from the bakery. Love and friendship mean paying attention and taking the time to show someone you care.
